See You in St. Louie!

The Missouri Association of School Librarians (MASL) Spring Conference is just a few days away (April 13-15).  We hope to see many of you there!  In preparation for conference, here are a few “Gateway-related” items to remember:

* YA Author Jonathan Maberry will be in attendance!  Mr. Maberry’s zombie apocalypse title Rot and Ruin won the 2013 Gateway Readers Award.   Mr. Maberry will receive his award and speak at the Readers Award Banquet Monday night from 6:00-8:00 in Grand D, E, and F.  He is also presenting two workshops in Regency B (Monday from 3:45-4:45 and Tuesday from 8:30-9:30).  During his presentation, Mr. Maberry will present an overview of apocalyptic, post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction and share some insights about why it’s a good thing kids are reading about the end of the world.  Finally, Mr. Maberry will be available to autograph books Monday afternoon/evening from 5:00-6:00 and 8:00-9:00.

*The Gateway Readers Award committee members will highlight the 2014-2015 nominees on Sunday from 2:45-3:45 in Grand A and again on Tuesday from 11:30-12:30 in Regency B.  If you want to know more about the 15 books selected for the 2014-2015 Gateway Awards, how to promote these books, get ideas for collaborating with your teachers, win some prizes, and more…then this is the workshop for you.

*The MASL Conference store located at Midway will be selling copies of the 2014-2015 nominees, as well as various Reader Award promotional items.   The deadline to pre-order items was earlier this month (those can be picked up on Sunday morning from 10:00-11:00).  Conference store hours are Sunday 11:00-5:45, Monday 8:00-12:00, and Monday 2:00-4:00.

One final note that isn’t necessarily related to conference:  Next Tuesday, April 15th, is the deadline to suggest a title for Gateway consideration.  If you have read a fantastic YA book with a 2013 copyright, be sure to let a committee member know when you see us at conference–or just leave a comment below.  Thanks for your help in ensuring our MO students have the best titles on our Gateway Readers Award list!
